Last weekend was the very first, Zine and Independent Comic Symposium (ZICS) in Brisbane, Australia at The Edge. It was a 3-day event that provided a forum for independent publishers to get together, meet one another, and showcase their wares to the greater public. There were a range of workshops and panels for folks to take part in—beginner guides on how to make your own zine or comic, to advanced master classes. Plus, Mystery School and The Bedroom Philosopher performed live (Jhonny did DJ mashup sets too) AND the launch night featured impressive live art battles courtesy of the awesome Scribble Slam peeps and ZICS artists. The event featured The Golden Stapler Awards (it’s the first time they’ve been held in QLD); I presented the award for Australian Zine Maker of the Year. There was also an interesting ‘Show Us Your ZICS’ show & tell portion of the program, where zine makers and comic creators gave a presentation shedding a little light on what they do. I especially enjoyed 90s zinester Vanessa Berry’s talk about the mail she’s received over the years while making zines; I think it was a little special for me because Vanessa made one of the first zines – Psychobabble – that I ever picked up when I first started making zines. All in all I had a really wonderful time. I can’t wait to do it all again next year!
