I know that with your creations you hope that wearers feel ‘confident’ would you say that you’re a confident person? What does being confident embody to you?
S: I am confident in many ways, not so confident in others. Little personal insecurities eat at me just like any other human.
For you, is what you wear and how you project yourself to the world via your appearance an extension of your creativity? How important is it to you? Is it something you think about?
S: I would not say that I ‘project’ – I am me, they are them. How I look now is always how I wanted to look from when I was a little girl. It’s how I always knew I would look when I became an adult. People are people, some like how I look and what I make others do not. I try not to put too much stock in it either way. Nice words are nice but mean words bite. I can’t only listen to the nice parts, I have to take them both in and then let them go. Listening too much to the jibber jabber that goes around is dangerous. I know who I am. I like how I look. I love what I make. period. Fuck everyone else!
Who inspires you in the creative world and what is it about them that you admire?
S: My friend and fellow ‘clowny lady’ Agatha Blois. Her custom leather denim and perfume/candle line (Carnival Wax) is pretty much what lives and breathes in my head—it’s beyond! I devour every last inch, thread and morsel of it; bathed in leather clowny drippings it more than turns me on and leaves me yearning for more.
Do you listen to music while you work? What would I find on your stereo/on your iPod?
S: I still and will always buy CDs. Ha! My musical crackerjack box is all over the place – everything from Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, Lead Belly and Son House to Rob Zombie, Shinedown, The Boss, ’Zeppelin, Smack, Black Veil Brides, The Last Vegas, U2, Maylene & the Sons of Disaster… to Heart, Joan Jett, ’Sabbath, The Cult, Aerosmith, Backyard Babies, Monster Magnet, ’Crue, Kiss, Speedealer, Toilet Boys, Zeke… to Melody Gardot. I recently got some big band stuff: Artie Shaw, Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller…and some southern rap—the fantastically filthy, Yelawolf!
What projects are you currently working on and what’s on the horizon for house of Gasoline Glamour?
S: [I’m] always working on new stuff. The workshop is a plethora of works in progress I like to keep secret until it’s a go in print or on TV. [If] you blab too much beforehand in this biz and it’s a ‘no go’ you end up looking like an asshole.
