Direct from Los Angeles, California comes some serious creativity and imagination from ‘clowny lady’ Shannon and her House of Gasoline Glamour. House of Gasoline Glamour is a line of custom clothes, shoes and accessories that have to be seen to be believed and even then they’re still surreal—the only limit is Shannon’s imagination! Embracing and putting to work studs, glitter, rhinestones, feathers, chains, spikes, zippers, bullets etc. in a way that only she can, her creations have been seen on and championed by Juliette Lewis, Pink, Nicki Minaj, Marky Ramone, Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, Paris Hilton, Black Veil Brides, Avril Lavigne, Perez Hilton, Milla Jovovich, Rihanna and even Justin Bieber. They have been featured on the pages of magazines all over the world from Vogue Italia and Vogue Germany to Dazed & Confused to Nylon to Vibe. Shannon’s philosophy on life is: The only law is survival. With her unique creations and hard work ethic House of Gasoline Glamour does more than just survive, it thrives. Here’s my Q&A with House of Gasoline Glamour’s sole creator…
When did you get started on the creative path? Have you always been a creative type?
SHANNON: From what I can remember as a child, I always did crafty stuff: coloring, painting, fun art time kid’s stuff.
What inspired you to start House of Gasoline Glamour? I read that you worked a lot of different kinds of retail jobs and as a buyer before you started Gasoline Glamour.
S: Yes that is true. I worked at many major retail stores. [It] gave me a good solid foundation for retail. I don’t know if I was so ‘inspired’ – I saw what was out there, I knew I could do it better. [I] figured I would gamble—go for it and see what happens!
Was it a hard decision for you to start your own business? Did you have any reservations or fears going into it?
S: Nope. I knew I did not want to work retail for the rest of my life, moved to L.A. and kind of wound up doing my own thing. It’s not like I planned it. Sometimes shit just happens.
Do you have any formal training in art or business? Do you think it is necessary to what you do?
S: No and no. I am the kind of person who learns by doing. Reading a book on how to do something is impossible for me; trial and error for sure.
As a creator and designer what is the most important thing to you?
S: Ha! Well making money is the priority. I would love to say the ‘art’ of it but, at the end of the day it’s just not true. If I can’t pay the bills, it doesn’t matter how good my shit is.
What type of designer would you call yourself?
S: I wouldn’t. It’s like when people ask me what my style is? It’s mine, that’s it, you know?
What is your favourite part of the design process?
S: The end. Ideas and images pop into my brain, executing them properly and to the fullest extent of my ability is the best part. For me it is the most fulfilling and exciting; the challenge to see if I can still do it, push it and [that] it does not suck.
